Kelly has ridden and trained horses upto Inter I and trained riders to Prix St George, and is very lucky to not only have her own homebred horses to compete, but she also has several horses to compete for owners. Kelly’s current competition horses are Lauder (20 year old Danish Warmblood, Inter I) Warum Trigger (14 year old Hanoverian, Prix st George) Dreams of Harmony (10 year old British Warmblood, Medium) Golden Symphony (12 year old sports horse, medium) with many youngsters coming through too. See the horses page to find out more about each of them!
Kelly trains mainly with International Grand Prix Rider Jackie Beavan, but also attends the National Trainers Convention and other demos/clinics to carry on the learning process. Her passion is for the sport of horse riding, particularly dressage, but being involved in the progression of both horse and rider is what excites her – whether that is watching a combination canter their first 20m circle, or win at a big competition, seeing her pupils (horses and riders) achieve their goal is invigorating!
Background: Coming from a non-horsey background Kelly worked hard on wearing her parents down to get her first pony at 14, Golden Melody, who not only taught her a huge amount (she was not the easiest mare to ride, but incredibly talented!) but is now the grandmother of two of Kelly’s competition horses, Golden Symphony and Dreams of Harmony, as well as the great grandmother of a super Dimaggio colt born in 2012 – that mare has a lot to answer for!! Mainly competing in showjumping (upto foxhunters) and eventing (upto Intermediate) Kelly then worked in the racing industry travelling as far as India as a Pupil Assistant trainer.
After returning to the UK she went to University as a ‘mature’ student, she graduated from Aberystwyth University with a degree in Zoology and Microbiology, followed by a PGCE as a secondary school biology teacher.
During this time Kelly became more fascinated by dressage than the jumping, and began her small breeding programme aimed at producing dressage horses. She also bought Alea II to train while she waited for the babies to come of age. Alea II was a 10 year old German mare, who couldn’t even canter a 20 metre circle! After 1 year schooling and lots of physio, Alea and Kelly were not only competing successfully at novice level, but were also selected for the Welsh Team at the Senior Inter Regionals, where they were placed. They then proceeded on getting to Medium level, with Summer Regionals, Winter Regionals and Riding club Nationals along the way, all in the space of 4 years.
Lauder – our fabulous veteran,20 year old Danish warmblood, owned by Colette Medland, who competes upto Inter I, been placed at 2 winter Regionals at Medium Freestyle, Advanced Medium Freestyle
and PSG Freestyle, 5th at the Petplan Championships at Medium Open in 2012. and competed in the Advanced Medium Open and Prix st George finals in 2014, and has been on the Welsh Team for the last 2 years, where in 2012 he won one of the Advanced Medium classes at the Home International. Lauder is having a slightly easier life now, but not retired – he will continue competing as he loves his ‘pony parties!’
Warum Trigger – 14 year old Hanoverian, also owned by Colette Medland. Trigger is competing at Advanced Medium and Prix st George, and competed at the Regionals in 2014, 2015 and 2016, narrowly missing out on the nationals by less than 0.2%! Next year! He is very exciting and getting much stronger and finding the more difficult work a lot easier now – his flying changes are spectacular!!
Dreams of Harmony – Mali for short a 10 year old British Warmblood owned and bred by Kelly another one for the future, showing bags of talent! He has had a few set backs, and is very nervous – but fingers crossed we have cracked that now! He has been very successful at Medium, and is starting work on his changes now, his lateral work is tremendous! Very exciting!
Golden Symphony – 12year old sports horse. Successful at novice to medium – competing on the Welsh International team, and in the process of polishing up her flying changes. Madison has gone back to stud this year to give Kelly more time to bring in her now 4 year old son, Maestro by DiMaggio.
Some of the next generation!!
Colette is the owner of two of the horses that Kelly competes – Lauder and Warum Trigger, and plays a huge part in their training and care at home and at competitions.
Colette is also a partner at Aeron Vets (www.aeronvets.co.uk) and is on hand for anything that needs veterinary attention on the yard. Horses that are here for rehabilitation will come under her care if their own vets are too far away, always working with the referring vet to ensure the best possible care for the horse.
When Colette is on the yard and ‘off duty’ we do ask that any liveries/owners don’t talk ‘shop’ unless it’s an absolute emergency!!
